Tenleytown Neighborhoods & Subdivisions  - Robeyville

4439 Alton Place, NW

Elmer Robey built 4439 Alton Place.  He was fifteen when his family came to Tenleytown and worked in the building trades throughout his life.

He lived in this house and around the corner on Albemarle Street into the 1930s.

At the time of his death, he resided in Virginia.  His descendants recall his stories of walking to the streetcar, taking it as far as possible and walking some more to reach the “church in the Wildwood,” which was built by the Robeys.

The church, known now as Wildwood Baptist Church, is on Old Georgetown Road in Bethesda.  Many members of the Robey family are buried in the adjacent cemetery.
